chris matthews brought that up several times. these are small pieces of the puzzle we cannot stress enough. we don't know if mitt romney will get a bump from this, but his appearance proved that he came to play ball, and he came to play hardball with the president. do we have any more insight into the strategy down to the whole looking at his papers the entire time or much of the time when romney was confronting him? >> tamron, we don't have any idea on the strategy. to a lot of people it looked like to borrow a football team doing a little defense, not too aggressive and above the fray, keep your lead. as we know in politics as well as in football, sometimes when you have a defense, you can give up an easy, quick score. that seemed it to happen last night. you regarded about the lack of fight for president obama. i don't think it was surprising that mitt romney had a good debate performance. a lot of us expected that. i think what surprised everyone was president obama didn't seem up and as energized as mitt romney was. >> i thi

i'm chris matthews back in washington. let me start tonight with two big questions, "hardball" questions if you will. one, why? why did what happened last night happen? why did a president who has proven himself as a policy expert and world class politician let the other guy take charge? because if he can't answer that question, he may be doomed to defeat in the remaining two debates. second big question, can a victory over the facts of last night's debate, what was true and what was not, turn the tables now? can barack obama win by getting out the word he didn't get out last night? and both are big questions tonight that might just decide this presidential election. i'm joined by governor ed rendell and ron reagan, both msnbc analysts. this is a tough blog by a guy who has been very strong for obama over the years. andrew sullivan of the daily beast. he wrote this last night, basically just at the end of the debate. this was a disaster for the president for the key people he needs to reach. his effete wonkish lectures may

i'm chris matthews in washington. on the way to denver. let me start with this brand new nbc/wall street journal poll out tonight. what it shows in addition to an obama leading that's hardening is a deep concern that mitt romney said about that 47% of the country he says can't be counted on to meet its responsibility. it's that part of the country that romney has dismissed as free-loaders, moochers, takers. people, especially veteran families, people retired on social security, regular americans, that is, don't like being dismissed that way, injury added by insult. i'm joined by chuck todd and howard fineman with "the huffington post." the latest poll shows among likely voters the president leads 49% to 46% for romney. that's down net two points from two weeks ago when the president was up by five. to what to you attribute the movement, chuck todd? >> well, first of all, the more important number has always been the president sitting at 49% or 50%. i would go through his job approval rating at 49%, his ballot test at 49%, those converge, a
